Which time controls can I play?
Four: Classical (one minute for every move), Bullet (one minute for the whole game), Blitz (three minutes plus two seconds per move) and Rapid (ten minutes), with real chess clocks, online and offline.
Does the app have chess puzzles?
Yes. Play Puzzles has more than 500 checkmate puzzles on small boards (4x4, 5x5 and 6x6): mate in 1, mate in 2 and mate in 3, ordered from easy to hard, with hints. Puzzles need an internet connection and a signed-in account, so your progress is saved.
Does it follow the full chess rules?
Yes: castling, en passant, promotion, check, checkmate, stalemate and draws, with drag and drop or tap to move, and undo before you confirm your move.
Is Chess free?
Yes. Chess is free to download and play on iPhone, iPad, Mac and Android. There are no in-app purchases: coins and XP are earned by playing, winning and the daily spin.
Can I play Chess offline?
Yes. Without internet you can play against the computer at three levels (Easy, Medium and Hard), or play a friend face to face on the same device.
How do I play Chess online with a friend?
Tap Play Online → Private Game and share the room name with your friend, or add them as a friend in the app to see when they are online and challenge them.
Is Chess available on Mac?
Yes. The App Store version of Chess also runs on Mac computers with Apple silicon (M1 or later): download it from the App Store on your Mac.
Do I need an account?
No account is needed to play. Signing in with Game Center (Apple) or Google Play Games saves your level, coins, statistics and friends to your account, on every device, and unlocks leaderboards and achievements.
